Improving pest control with a diverse workforce

Improving pest control with a diverse workforce

At Allstate, we’re continuously striving to meet the wide range of needs of our ever- expanding customer base. Luckily, as a multicultural business, we’re able to lean on our team for help. As our business continues to grow, we’ve made sure that our team representation reflects the diversity of the local Adelaide community.

“We are looking for a diverse range of people that can meet the needs of the market.” – Vasili Tsoutouras, General Manager Allstate Pest Control

Why we value diversity

With strong growth predicted in 2024, Vasili Tsoutouras, General Manager Allstate Pest Control, is looking forward to future workforce planning and finding good candidates for the Allstate Academy. He believes that the heart, or driving force of the business lies in creating a dynamic, multicultural team. He says, “We want people with diverse skillset[s] – those who can add extra talent and value – bring another way of thinking.”

So far, the business has benefited immensely from having diversity, and not just by enriching the culture at the Allstate office. Having team members from different backgrounds has paved the way for Allstate to break into segments of the market that were previously inaccessible due to language barriers. It has also given the team a better understanding of how to respect different cultural beliefs and customs when attending a customer’s home or business.

Bringing different experience and new knowledge

Let’s introduce some of Allstate’s newest team members who previously lived in other countries and offer a fresh perspective in their work.

grace

Grace’s story

Relocating from Myanmar the end of May 2022, Grace began working for Allstate on October 10 as a Customer Care representative.

After finishing a Masters qualification in Business, she put it to good use in running her own successful business in selling online products.

In Myanmar, Grace learned firsthand about the importance of communicating clearly with customers to ensure that they are satisfied and their needs have been met.

She has been expanding her knowledge learning about Allstate’s systems, which are very new to her, because she encountered less developed systems back in Myanmar.

She’s enjoying being part of a friendly team and great workplace culture and feeling very much supported as she settles into her role at Allstate.

Grace has adjusted well to her new life in Adelaide, appreciating the fresh air and quieter traffic and going to the beach.

The main challenge for Grace has been getting used to the Australian accent, local slang and let’s be frank, the swearing that inevitably comes with it!

hossein

Hossein’s story

Arriving from Iran five months ago, Hossein is one of our newest pest control technicians.

Although he has only been working at Allstate for three months, he is no stranger to the industry. Hossein has owned and operated his own pest control business for 16 years in Iran. He has extensive experience in pest control, particularly in preventing German and American cockroaches, moths and rodents.

With a deep knowledge of pest control stemming from a Masters qualification in Medical Entomology, Hossein has enjoyed using Allstate’s innovative technology and iPads to make his work more efficient.

One of Hossein’s biggest challenges so far is learning different ways to manage pests Australia, given that he has a relatively limited access to pesticides here compared to Iran.

He’s also enjoying shadowing some of his colleagues learning about termites and poisonous spiders, which are uncommon pests in Iran.

So far, Hossein is settling in well in Adelaide. He’s enjoying the warm weather, immersing himself in local culture, going to the beach and visiting the Botanic Gardens in his spare time.

At Allstate, we welcome every team member’s unique background and skills. We believe that much of our success comes from bringing out the best in every person, no matter where they come from. Since 1986, our team has helped customers all around metropolitan Adelaide resolve their pest outbreaks in residential, commercial and industrial settings. Supporting sustainability with the Forktree Project

Supporting sustainability with the Forktree Project

As a company who believes in keeping things close to home, Allstate is excited to contribute to the rewilding project on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

At Allstate we have always believed in practical, local solutions for even the most complex of challenges. We’re committed to playing our part in creating a sustainable environment, and so when we heard about the Forktree Project we knew we wanted to get involved.

What is the Forktree Project?

Established in April 2019, the Forktree Project is a charity setup to combat the twin threats of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Their goal? To re-wild a degraded 133-acre former pastoral property in South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula back to nature. This involves planting native trees and shrubs on the property to attract native animals, insects and birds, while sequestering tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon.

Tim Jarvis AM, the Forktree Project lead, says “Australia has the highest rate of native species loss in OECD nations and is the most climate-exposed developed country in the world, so it is in our interest to do more. South Australia is already doing a lot of good in renewable energy, but all the renewable energy in the world won’t make up for the habitat lost – we need to do more to restore habitat.”

How Allstate is getting involved

Allstate CEO, Vasili Tsoutouras, values the Forktree Project for their active commitment to restoring local habitats. “We chose Forktree because it is a South Australian organisation. As a proud South Australian family business, everything comes back to where we are, and we ask people to buy from us because we support locals. We want to be as sustainable as we can and have a lot of belief in the Forktree Project because of its direct action through re-wilding and putting things back into the ground.”

Allstate Pest Control has provided the Forktree Project with a number of hand tools, as well as an electric post hole digger which enables the charity to drill holes before planting or putting in posts.

This has enabled Forktree to both plant trees more easily and install protective shelters in their seed orchard to protect seeds from the wind.

Tim recalls that “In my conversations with Vasili, he has a very sustainability-focused outlook on the world, which you wouldn’t necessarily expect from people in his industry.”

How businesses can contribute

To make their vision a reality, the Forktree Project relies on the support of small and medium businesses. Its partners provide everything from technical advice to funds, and Forktree also runs corporate tree planting days where organisations can assist with tree planting. The support that Forktree receives from small and medium-sized businesses is critical for the organisation’s success.

Tim explains – “For organisations whose core business doesn’t involve sustainability-focused activities, being involved with the Forktree project has two aspects. Firstly, it gives them the opportunity to start the conversation about sustainability in their organisation. Secondly, regardless of who you are as an organisation, you can offset carbon by helping plant trees and replace habitat.”

Dengue Fever: Treatment, Prevention and a Global Community

A group of Australian companies and entrepreneurs are helping to raise money and awareness for the oncoming Dengue Fever season in Sri Lanka and finding ways to help the local communities manage it.

This article outlines the issues many Sri Lankan’s face every year and what can be done to help.

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue (DENG-gey) fever is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world.

There are four different strains of dengue virus (DENV 1, DENV 2, DENV 3, and DENV 4). Each type of dengue virus produces its own set of symptoms. However, all four types cause similar symptoms, making them hard to distinguish.

Dengue fever is an illness caused by a virus transmitted from mosquitoes to humans. It causes flu-like symptoms including high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, and sometimes bleeding.

The disease is most common in tropical areas where there are large numbers of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. The mosquito carrying dengue virus bites during daytime when people are outdoors working or playing. People who have been bitten by infected mosquitoes may develop dengue fever within 2 weeks after they were bitten. Dengue fever usually lasts for several days but can last longer.

Most patients recover without treatment. However, if they have any of these signs or symptoms, they should call their doctor right away.

• Severe abdominal pain
• Blood in urine (hematuria)
• Bleeding under the skin (petechiae)
• Headache that doesn’t go away

or

Symptoms of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever

Because each strain of dengue virus causes a unique set of symptoms, doctors use laboratory tests to identify the exact strain of dengue causing the patient’s illness. This helps determine whether the patient needs treatment for dengue fever or another condition.

There is no vaccine available to prevent dengue fever. However, there are several medications used to treat symptoms, including painkillers, anti-nausea drugs, and antibiotics. Some patients may need hospitalization for severe cases.

What is the best treatment for dengue fever?

A person is at risk of dengue fever if they live or travel in an area where dengue occurs and mosquitoes that can carry it live. About 1 in 20 people sick with dengue will develop severe dengue after their initial symptoms begin to fade. If a person has severe dengue and is treated immediately at a hospital or medical facility, that person has a greater than 99% chance of recovering.

If they have dengue fever, they should avoid other OTC pain relievers, including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve).

To treat severe cases of dengue fever at a hospital, doctors will give intravenous (IV) fluids and electrolytes (salts) to replace those lost through vomiting or diarrhea.

What is the fastest way to prevent dengue?

Although there is no remedy, scientifically proven Dengue vaccine or prevention of dengue fever, there is more than one strategy for dengue prevention and can still be taken will help to prevent and protect against getting infected with dengue fever.

Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible, or invest in insect screens. While keepingdoors and windows closed as much as possible is a good way to prevent mosquitoes and other insects from getting in, this is not always the most practical idea.

Control measures are effective in reducing the incidence of dengue fever. These include larval source management, environmental sanitation, and community participation.

Larvae are the immature form of mosquitoes that live in water. They feed on decaying organic matter and excrete waste materials that provide nutrients for plant growth. Larvae are found in stagnant water sources such as ponds, tanks, and gutters.

Environmental sanitation refers to removing breeding sites of larvae. Environmental sanitation can be achieved through regular cleaning of drains and gutters, emptying of containers holding standing water, removal of rubbish, and covering of open spaces with netting.

Community participation involves educating communities about the importance of preventing breeding sites and encouraging them to participate in cleanups. Community members should be involved in identifying and reporting breeding sites and removing them.

Prevalence of Dengue Fever

Dengueaffects over 100 million people annually worldwide. It is endemic in many countries including Sri Lanka where there were approximately 1.5 million cases reported in 2017.

The economic impact of dengue outbreaksis enormous. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the annual cost of dengue infectionsin Sri Lanka was estimated at US$1.2 billion in 2010. This includes direct medical costs, indirect costs due to loss of productivity, and intangible costs associated with pain and suffering.

According to WHO estimates, the total number of deaths attributed to dengue fever in 2015 was 50 000 globally. Of these, 96% occurred in Asia and the Pacific region.

Sri Lankan government data shows that the average cost per case of dengue fever treatment in 2016 was $8.3. The majority of this cost ($7.6) was incurred by patients themselves through out-of-pocket payments.

World Pest Day 2022

World Pest Day 2022

Happy World Pest Day: celebrating the service that protects our way of life

Today most of us would have woken up relatively healthy, or at least free from insect-borne disease. We would have walked through a house that if not clean, was relatively clear of cockroaches and spiders scurrying along the floor and walls. We would open a pantry where packaging was intact and food was safe to eat, or maybe dropped into a cafe for our morning brew where, despite so much food in one place, we weren’t greeted by rats racing across the floor.

Protecting our clean and comfortable way of life is the thousands of pest control technicians dedicated to safeguarding our homes, businesses and health against the impacts of pests.

World Pest Day is our opportunity to look back on the evolutions and inventions in pest control, and celebrate the tens of thousands of pest control technicians who have a role in making our lifestyles possible.

What is World Pest Day?

While pest control has been around since at least 2500 B.C., World Pest Day is a much newer concept, with the inaugural ceremony on 6th June 2017.

Allstate has close ties to this all-important event. Originally hosted in Beijing by the Chinese Pest Control Association, the World Pest Day was co-sponsored by the Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers’ Association – an organisation of which our very own CEO Vasili Tsoutouras has served as President.

世界害虫日新

A brief history of pest control

From flies pestering cavemen to rats invading grain stores, pests have troubled humans since the beginning of mankind. The first evidence of chemical pest control was documented relatively later in 2500 B.C., when the Mesopotamians used sulphur to prevent mites and insects invading their crops.

Chinese farmers led the next evolution with several inventions between 1200 and 300 B.C. This included botanical insecticides to treat seeds and prevent fungus, and using predatory ants to remove beetles and caterpillars from their citrus orchards. Another questionable technique they used was a mercury and arsenical compound to control body lice…fortunately modern day pest control is a lot safer!

The Romans also invented several pest control techniques, until the fall of the Roman Empire caused pest control science to go backward, and a great deal of disease outbreaks occur in the process. Most famous of all is the Bubonic Plague, but many other pest-borne diseases decimated Western Europe during the Middle Ages, including tuberculosis, leprosy and smallpox.

When the Renaissance brought science back to the mainstream, it brought many new pest control inventions along with it. People began experimenting with chemicals, herbs and arsenic to repel insects and other pests. This was complemented by mechanical technology, such as a flytrap and fleatrap in the 1700s, and the first lethal mousetrap in the late 1800s.

The first publicly advertised pest control company was founded in London in 1690. Called H. Tiffin and Son Ltd., their trademark was Bug Destroyers to Her Majesty and the Royal Family.

Cleaner, safer and smarter: the evolution of modern-day pest control

Since the second half of the 20th century, we have become more aware of the toxicity of certain chemicals to our health, followed by awareness of our impact on the environment around us. Pest control has followed suit, with industry leaders always looking for cleaner, less impactful and more humane ways to control pests.

With pest control forming such an important part of clean, safe and well functioning businesses, many industry leaders are also on a mission to find the most efficient and least disruptive way to manage pests in these environments.

At Allstate we have been stay at the forefront of these innovations, whether they are AI-powered rat traps or OvoControl as a zero-harm way to remove pest birds.

We’re also proud to have developed several solutions of our own through our PestSense brand, which helps our clients undertake pest control more conveniently and cost-effectively.

For us at Allstate, World Pest Day is an opportunity to reflect on our 37 years of evolution in the pest control industry, celebrate our wonderful team who keep homes and businesses safe, and thank our clients who give us the opportunity to do so.

Having a professional website, positive online reviews and word of mouth recommendations gives pest controllers more credibility to their clients.

You can trust your pest controller if they are fully licenced, insured and quality assured.

It’s important to be able to add and store relevant information, then produce the correct reports and documentation for auditing purposes. Different companies approach this in their own way, so it’s best to work out beforehand what system will work best for you.

Many pest control companies offer varying guarantees on their workmanship, so it’s handy to know upfront what their customer satisfaction policies are.

Having rapport with your pest controller makes working with them so much easier, as they understand you and support your role as a property manager, and they are responsive to the needs of your clients and tenants. You’ll also want someone who is available for urgent problems, and is experienced, trustworthy and punctual.

When you’re juggling many tasks as a property manager, the last thing you need is an urgent pest outbreak, and not knowing who you can turn to do effectively remove the problem. That’s why you’ll want to choose someone who is fully licenced and insured, reliable, offers guarantees on their work, and has a good reputation in the community.

As a property manager, you’re in charge of a large number of rental properties and constantly liaising with tenants, landlords and tradespeople. With such a busy schedule, when you get a request for pest control, it’s important that you can turn to a licensed pest expert that you can count on. Ideally, someone who takes the time to understand you and your tenants, is reliable, experienced, efficient and safety compliant.

If you’ve been searching for a pest control provider but not sure what qualities look for, we’ve got some tips on how to tell if they have a good reputation, what sort of guarantees they should offer for their workmanship, and whether or not they’re operating to national and industrial standards.

Does your pest exterminator have the right reputation?

If you’ve got a pest problem on your hands, your first instinct would be to approach someone who is experienced and you can trust to quickly and effectively prevente it. There’s a few ways you can find a reliable pest controller in Adelaide:

Word of mouth recommendations

If you don’t already know a pest control expert, the next best thing is to ask other property manager colleagues for their suggestions on who they’ve had positive experiences working with.

Check their website

With many people using search engines to find services these days, it’s never been more competitive for pest controllers to make sure that their business catches your eye. With many opting to have an online presence, it’s important to make sure that their website looks professional, with clear contact details, as well as photos of their vans and the team wearing clean and tidy uniforms.

You can see how easy it is to get in touch with them, and whether they come across the way you would expect.

Positive online reviews

Licencing, insurance and industry compliance

Part of earning a good reputation means having the appropriate professional credentials to demonstrate expertise.

Licencing

To carry out paid pest control work in South Australia, a pest management technician’s licence is compulsory.. Working with an unlicensed technician can affect your warranty protection on any service that is carried out.

Industry standards

It’s critical to stay up to date by monitoring and operating in line with changing industry standards. This ensures the safety and quality of work by your chosen pest controller.

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance

Although pest control isn’t considered a high risk industry, unforeseeable events can still happen. If the technician is fully insured for their work, this gives you, the landlord and tenants added protection in case of accidental damage. Check if their insurance policy varies for work completed with cash payments versus EFTPOS.

Allstate’s professional standards

As a SAI Global certified Quality Endorsed Company, all our pest control technicians are fully insured, police-checked and licensed by the SA Government Department of Health.

As active members of the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association, we regularly monitor and maintain compliance with AS/NZS4801, ISO9001 and 14001 standards, and ensure that we always meet the relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.

This way, you can have peace of mind that all of our work is completed in line with national expectations.

Warranties

Now that you’re satisfied your pest controller is operating with a high degree of integrity, it’s handy to check that they have a policy in place to guarantee their work for a specified period of time. This will vary for different jobs, circumstances and treatments they apply.

Any products that turn out to be faulty are usually covered by the manufacturer, but you should always ask your pest exterminator first.

Request for a written quote and receipts

By physically disclosing the scope of work needed and when it is completed, this ensures that the job is carried out as per both you and the landlord’s expectations.

Allstate’s money-back guarantee

To demonstrate our commitment to high quality workmanship, if you are not completely satisfied with our pest control treatments we provide a corrective service free of charge. If you’re still not happy after 30 days, we will refund you the full amount you paid.

Reporting and documentation

In order to demonstate that they’re delivering the best service possible, pest exterminators must produce reports showing that they’re operating within national and industrial safety standards.

When a pest exterminator is able to present all relevant and critical information in a precise and streamlined way, this makes your job as a property manager much easier, especially when auditing time inevitably rolls around.

Reporting systems

Different pest control companies use their own methods to collect and pass on information to their clients. Some use traditional paperwork, while others opt for emails. In recent times, user-friendly online portals and apps have allowed for easier access and security.

Check how different companies choose to present their reporting system, and see how this fits in with the way you like to organise your records.

At Allstate, we store all your pest information securely in one place on our PESTsense Digital Pest Register.

This program allows you to add, view and monitor pest information, including comprehensive job details, Pest Control Service Reports, Risk Management Records and compliance documentation. By having an easy to access online system, we aim to help you save time and maximise convenience.

Compliance documentation

When third party audits inevitably come around, you’ll need to provide correct and up-to-date information to make the process run smoothly and ensure a successful outcome. If these records are easily accessible, you’ll know exactly where to find what you need and avoid scrambling around looking for paperwork.

Through the PESTsense Digital Pest Register, you’ll be able to check that all licenses and Safety Data Sheets remain current at any time. This means that you won’t need to rush to complete paperwork manually in order to meet auditing deadlines, while reducing your workload.

Is the pest control company easy to work with?

Finding the right pest control service can make your job much easier.

Sometimes, it all comes down to having rapport with your point of contact, whether that person is the business owner, pest technician, account manager, or all of the above.

Ideally, you’ll want to work with someone who is friendly, experienced, knowledgeable, trustworthy, reliable and punctual and a good communicator.

Due to the urgent nature of some pest outbreaks, you’ll need a technician who has a 24/7 emergency service.

Appointments scheduled around your clients

At Allstate, we understand that pest problems can be stressful for both you and your client. However, we’re also respectful of your client’s time and their space. That’s why we aim to be flexible with our work in order to minimise disruption to their routine or business operations.

Priority response and access for property managers

Our property manager clients receive priority access, so our highly trained customer service and pest technician teams will respond quickly to your call outs. This means that you’re able to reassure the property owner and tenant that the problem has been fixed, and leaves everyone feeling confident that it’s a job well done.

Keep landlords and tenants satisfied by choosing the right pest control operator

As a property manager, choosing the right pest control service to work with enables you to maintain strong relationships, create trust and instil landlord and tenants’ confidence in your abilities.

With many pest control operators in Adelaide, it can be hard to know which one will suit your needs the best, and you may find that you have better rapport with some.

Along with being able to communicate and work well with them, it’s reassuring to know if they have a good reputation in the community, whether this is through online reviews, a professional looking website or word of mouth recommendations.

To ensure that their work is covered by warranty and that you’re protected if there’s any accidental damage, look for fully licenced, insured, police-checked, industry and Australian standard compliant pest control businesses. Most pest control services have a guarantee for their workmanship, but the time frame can vary.

When it comes to third party auditing, you’ll want to make sure that you have all the relevant information to submit. This is where a company with accurate, streamlined and up-to-date reporting systems and easy-to-access compliance documentation puts you in a better position for a successful outcome.

Since 1986, Allstate has offered highly responsive, effective and flexible service to property managers across of Adelaide.
