On the road with Kiki – Episode 42

forktree project tim

Welcome back for our latest episode of On the Road with Kiki, where we join pest consultant Kristian as he visits our fabulous clients around Adelaide to assess pest outbreaks.

Starting off the day in beautiful Hove, a client has noticed in the past few months that there is a flock of pigeons nesting under the solar panels at their two-storey home. In fact, the client noticed that this problem only seemed to start after their neighbours got solar skirting to protect their solar panels from this same flock. So it appears that while the deterrent has worked well for the neighbours, unfortunately, this has driven the pigeons to relocate to our client’s solar panels instead. The good news is that this means the solution for our client is simple. Kristian suggests installing solar skirting and cleaning to move the pigeons right along.

The next client has taken some photos of a pesky bushy tailed possum to show Kristian. This clever creature seems to be getting into the roof space through a tricky little entry point between the pergola and the flat roof. Kristian climbs up to the roof for a look and confirms that there’s evidence of possum activity. He recommends a quote for proofing and installing a trap and one way door.

For the last job of the day, Kristian visits a previous client who had possums, but the exact same issue seems to be happening again. While they aren’t hearing hissing noises, they can hear running, thumping, scratching and scurrying sounds. This is more noticeable in the ceiling above the lounge room but can also be heard in the hallway and bedrooms and sometimes, even in the walls. Kristian climbs up for a look and sees old possum droppings along with fresher rodent droppings. So, he gives the client a quote for a rodent baiting service. And that’s another week on the road done and dusted!

We’re back with another episode of Out on the Road with Kiki. In this series, we accompany pest consultant Kristian as he assesses pest outbreaks in homes and businesses all over Adelaide.

The first job of the day is in Henley Beach, where some pesky pigeons have been perching on a client’s rooftop antenna. Lucky for the client, their solar panels aren’t affected, but there are a lot of messy bird droppings. In any case, Kristian has the solution to fix the problem. He recommends installing a bird spider device on the antenna to act as a deterrent and leaves the client with a quote.

Next up is a termite assessment in Camden Park. The client is doing some renovations on the floors, and pulling up the old vinyl covering has revealed a nasty surprise – there’s active termites in the wooden floorboards. Kristian notes that there’s a lot of damage to the flooring, particularly in one of the rooms, and quickly rules out a liquid treatment as an option, because it’s not practical. Instead, a termite baiting system is the best way to go due to the extent of damage, so he offers the client a quote.

The last client for the day is also concerned about termites. They’ve just sold their home, and they’re looking to get some termite protection before they move out. They’ve had some spot treatment completed by another company in the past. Kristian recommends installing Allstate’s Sentricon termite baiting stations, which the client accepts. They’re booked in to have the job done next week, but for now, it’s a wrap for this week!

Established in 1986, Allstate has grown to become the largest independent pest control company in Adelaide. With a 24/7 urgent callout service to all suburbs of Adelaide, our technicians are fully equipped to manage all types of pest outbreaks in residential, commercial and industrial settings. HOW TO PREPARE FOR A MOSQUITO FREE SUMMER

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A MOSQUITO FREE SUMMER

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A MOSQUITO FREE SUMMER

Looking forward to outdoor entertaining over the festive season? Watch out for pesky mosquitoes! It’s not just their itchy and irritating bites that will spoil the fun – they can also spread some pretty nasty diseases.

Avoid getting bitten with an unexpected mosquito outbreak this summer. Our latest Hivemind article is here to keep you mosquito free.

What questions will this article answer?

Why are mosquitoes more common in summer?

As the weather heats up, it supports the mosquito life cycle by providing them with ideal conditions to flourish.

Female mosquitoes are known to lay eggs more frequently in warm weather, with up to 100 per batch. Once these hatch, their larvae will grow, ideally in an environment that is between 7-16 degrees Celsius, surrounded by a source of water.

The process of larval development can speed up in warmth and humidity, so if these ideal conditions coincide, this can have a significant impact of the mosquito population. For prolonged periods of heat, this means that mosquitoes are more likely to keep reproducing.

As adult mosquito metabolism increases with hot weather, you’ll be more likely to notice them flying around scavenging for food. This is usually in the form of blood from a host for female mosquitoes, and plant nectar for males.

Signs of a mosquito outbreak

While it’s not unusual to notice more mosquitoes in warm weather, here’s some ways that you can tell if you have a full-blown infestation:

You frequently hear buzzing sounds

Due to the rapid beating of their wings during flight, mosquitoes give off a persistent, characteristic high pitched buzzing noise.

You notice more mosquitoes in shady areas

As moisture levels tend to evaporate in the presence of the sun, mosquitoes are generally drawn to darker places, which are a definite favourite for female mosquitoes to hide and digest their food.

You notice more mosquitoes in areas with higher levels of moisture

From ponds, bird baths, pet bowls to flowerpots and moist garden beds, female mosquitoes are clever at finding places with the perfect conditions to lay their eggs.

Mosquito bites

If you’re getting bitten by pesky mosquitoes more than usual, this means that there are female mosquitoes in the area. They may be laying their eggs around your home.

Mosquitoes in your kitchen

If you leave food uncovered in your kitchen, especially if it is high in sugar content, such as fruit and lollies, male mosquitoes will find this irresistible. However, you may also find that females will join them if their preferred food source (blood) is unavailable.

Problems caused by mosquitoes

While they may be small, these tiny terrors can cause huge problems for you and your family.

As they move from host to host feeding on blood, mosquitoes are well known for their ability for spreading serious diseases, such as Barmah Forest virus infection, Chikungunya virus, Dengue fever, Elephantiasis, Japanese encephalitis, Malaria, Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River virus infection, Yellow fever and Zika virus.

Mosquito bites are notorious for being itchy and red and cause varying degrees of swelling. In some people, they may also trigger allergic reactions and in severe cases, bites can cause anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention.

Sometimes, you’ll hear them before you see them as their persistent buzzing noises can be distracting and disruptive.

How to protect your home from mosquitoes

Although it can be very difficult to manage mosquitoes altogether without professional help, there are still some steps that you can take to make your home less inviting to mosquitoes. Here’s some of our top recommendations:

Install screens over windows and doors
Having a mesh or wire screen as a physical barrier is always helpful, but it’s best to avoid leaving doors and windows open if possible.

    Remove breeding sites
Fill ditches and holes in the ground to prevent water from accumulating as this becomes a potential breeding habitat. Inspect your yard and ensure that there is adequate drainage for pooling water. Consider filling pot plant saucers with sand to absorb excess water.

    Regular property maintenance
Make sure that the plumbing and water drainage system at your property is working efficiently, with no leaking pipes and blockages.
Keep your yard clean and tidy, taking care to trim trees and vegetation to limit overgrowth and hiding spots for mosquitoes. Dispose of fallen fruit and vegetables.

Prevent mosquitoes from following you into your home
If possible, limit outdoor activity during peak active times, or use mosquito nets to keep them out of your space.

When you’re heading outdoors, wear insect repellent that contains diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin. You can also use natural alternatives such as eucalyptus or lemon oil, citronella, tea tree oil, but these will need be applied more frequently.
Wear protective clothing and a hat to limit any potential mosquito contact. Bright coloured clothing is known to be less appealing to mosquitoes than darker shades.
You can also consider purchasing electronic repellent devices that are available from hardware stores.

Avoid leaving potential food sources outside
Where possible, keep food items covered and consider using a water dispenser for pets instead of leaving an open water bowl.

    Turn on the fan
The moving air current disrupts mosquitoes in flight and disperses carbon dioxide, which attracts them to human hosts.

    Professional mosquito treatment

The most effective way to control a mosquito outbreak is through chemical control. We use Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) approved products that are designed to target adult mosquitoes as well as their larvae.

After an assessment of the outbreak and the layout of your property, your Allstate pest control technician will often use a combination of the following treatment methods:

    Larvicides
For ponds and standing or stagnant water areas which are common breeding sites for larvae, we apply highly targeted larvicides to prevente all mosquito larvae. You can be confident that these chemicals have minimal impact on other aquatic organisms.

    Adulticides
When there are a large amount of active adult mosquitoes, we’ll need to use a different approach that covers a greater area, that may need to be applied multiple times. This can include:

    • Fogging
During active times (mainly dawn or dusk), we’ll apply an airborne spray that contains either a natural or synthetic pyrethroid chemical to the entire affected area. These chemicals disrupt the mosquito nervous system and cause paralysis. Fogging is usually effective for 2-3 days.
    • Residual barrier treatments
We use this for smaller, more targeted areas, aiming to stop adult mosquitoes from entering your home by lingering on surfaces where they may land. We commonly apply this treatment to fences, eaves, walls, vegetation or foliage and it is known to last for up to 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for joining us yet again for another episode of On the Road with Kiki! In this series, we follow pest consultant Kristian as he visits homes and businesses with pest concerns all around Adelaide. It’s a lovely sunny day today and Kristian is ready to help his clients prevente pests for good!

The first job of the day is a termite assessment at a rental property. The tenant can see that there’s some water appearing on the floor near the bathroom entry. The owner’s son came over and pulled the carpet back to reveal a wooden joint and found some termites. Kristian takes a closer look and thankfully, doesn’t see termite activity, only some moisture and wood rot. He recommends a termite inspection and some preventative treatment just in case.

The next client is also concerned about termite prevention. They’ve just recently bought a new house, which was given the all clear during a building inspection. Kristian leaves them with a quote for a termite protection system, which the client will discuss with his partner.

For the last job of the day, heads to Mount Barker for a possum assessment. The client can hear noises in the roof. Kristian climbs up for a look inside the roof space, and sees mice and rats, so he suggests installing a rodent baiting system, which the client happily accepts on the spot. And that’s it for another week

How To Prevent Termites In Commercial Buildings

How To Prevent Termites In Commercial Buildings

HOW TO PREVENT TERMITES IN COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS

Termites are a notorious pest to homes and businesses in Australia. They are thought to be responsible for significant damage that requires repairs averaging $10,000 per home — and it isn’t covered by insurance.

For commercial buildings, the cost can be much higher due to the impact on business reputation and operations, equipment damage and breach of health and safety standards. The good news? Termite attacks are highly preventable if you seek professional assistance.

Continue reading if you’re keen to learn how to keep your commercial property protected from termites all year round.

What questions will this article answer?

Why is it important to prevent a termite outbreak?

Termites may be small, but they can cause significant damage to buildings. In Australia, they are thought to affect one in every five houses, and cause over $100 million dollars in damage to homes each year.

Unfortunately, since termite damage is considered as preventable, property insurance does not cover the cost of repairs.

If you’re responsible for a commercial property, however, the bill could be much higher. Building damage can have a severe impact on your business and operations, as well as your reputation. On top of this, any structural problems can cause accidents, start fires, damage equipment and compromise the health and safety of tenants, staff, customers and clients. Breaching government regulations may also lead to heavy penalties.

Fortunately, termite outbreaks can be easily avoided as Allstate offers comprehensive termite prevention programs for commercial facilities of all sizes.

    Signs of a termite infestation

Termite outbreaks can often go undetected in the early stages, so they require a professional with training and the right equipment to detect subtle signs of activity. In any case, it’s handy to have an awareness of termite activity.

    Mud tubes

If you notice accumulations of brown trails, these could be tunnels which consist of dirt, droppings, wood and other debris, known as mud tubes. They are built by termites to protect them while foraging.

Knocking on timber structures and getting a hollow sound

When there has been significant termite damage, you may hear a hollow, empty sound when tapping or knocking on a wooden structure.

    Clicking sounds in walls

Active termites tunnelling through wood, or soldier termites warning of a threat to other termites can give rise to a persistent clicking sound.

    Termite swarms and discarded wings

In spring and summer, termite alates, or winged termites, will leave the nest to start a new colony elsewhere. You may see them nesting in tree stumps and woodpiles in your yard, and flying around lights or windowsills.

Damage to floors, walls and ceilings

Look for cracks, changes to paint, blisters, warping and sagging. You may even find doors and windows are harder to open and close.

    Electricity interruptions

Termites can cause electrical transmission issues by a leaving a build-up of organic material and mud tubes around electrical fittings and wiring.

You can learn more about the signs of a termite outbreak here and here.

How to prevent a termite outbreak

Here are some steps you can take to reduce the chances of a termite attack at your commercial property:

    • Trim tree branches, vegetation and foliage that are in contact with the sides of your building
    • Remove old tree stumps, as well as piles of mulch and wood
    • Be aware if your neighbours have experienced termite problems
    • Have yearly termite inspections

    Termite inspections

The purpose of a regular termite inspection isn’t just to check whether your property is under a termite attack. It’s also to assess for potential risk factors, and to make sure that your existing termite barrier system is still in good working order.

Depending on the level of risk, we recommend having a termite inspection of your commercial property at least once a year, in accordance with government guidelines.

If you’re in a higher risk area for termite attacks, for example, your property is surrounded by trees or has greater levels of moisture, this means that you may need more frequent inspections.

During a termite inspection, your licensed Allstate termite inspector will cover all areas of your property, inside and outside. This includes fence and yard, especially if there are tree stumps or timbers. We’ll cover all interior areas, from the floor to ceiling, including the roof void and subfloors.

You can expect us to use equipment such as borescopes, sounding tools, moisture readers and movement detectors.

    Professional termite treatment

As commercial properties vary in size, layout, surroundings and the number of tenants, our termite control technicians will come up with a personalised treatment plan to manage the outbreak.

    Premise Treated Zones
Applied to the soil in specific treated zones, Premise termiticide is a powerful liquid treatment designed to kill termites. As it cannot be detected by termites, it is widely used in popular foraging areas.

    Sentricon® Always Active™
Protection around the perimeter of your property is one of the best ways to restrict termite activity within the building. We position each Sentricon bait station at 30-50cm away from the building, with at least one station every three metres to maximise its effect. Each station is installed underground and contains a termiticide chemical that can be carried back to the nest by termites who have fed on it, leading to the prevention of the entire population.
