Activated Carbon/Activated Charcoal

Activated Carbon/Activated Charcoal: A type of carbon that has been treated to make it extremely porous and adsorbent. Activated carbon is used in water filters and air purifiers to remove impurities, and in gas masks and respirators to absorb harmful gases.

Acute Effect: An effect that occurs immediately or shortly after exposure to a substance. Acute effects are usually the result of high levels of exposure over a short period of time.

Acute Toxicity

Acute Toxicity:The ability of a substance to cause harmful effects when exposed to it for a short period of time. Acute toxicity is measured by the LD50, which is the dose at which 50% of test animals die from exposure to the substance.

Adjuvant

Adjuvant:A substance that is added to a pesticide formulation to improve its performance. Adjuvants can increase the efficacy of the pesticide, improve its safety, or both.
