Home / glossary / Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of Surface Water

Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of Surface Water:Groundwater under the direct influence of surface water (GWUDI) is groundwater that has been contaminated by contact with surface water bodies (such as lakes, rivers, or oceans). GWUDI can occur when there is a break in the groundwater system (such as a well) that allows surface water to enter and mix with the groundwater. GWUDI can also occur when there is enough rainfall or snowmelt that recharge from surface water bodies exceeds infiltration rates and causes groundwater to rise up towards the surface.
