Your guide to Pigeon Control

Your guide to Pigeon Control

YOUR GUIDE TO HUMANE PIGEON CONTROL

Introduced to Australia from Europe, feral or pest pigeons have become well adapted to urban environments and steadily increased in population since. Unfortunately, these noisy pests can also carry diseases, parasites, leave a mess and damage your property.

With readily available nesting sites, sources of food and water, pigeons can breed all year round, almost anywhere. They may well choose your home or business as their next preferred spot to create a nuisance!

If you’re worried about a pigeon outbreak, keep reading our blog to learn more about how to responsibly prevente these pests for good.

What questions will this article answer?

How to identify pest pigeons

Grey coloured with a small collar of iridescent feathers around the neckline, pigeons have two characteristic black stripes across each wing. While a majority are grey, you’ll also find brown and white coloured pigeons as well.

Unlike feral pigeons, you can identify domestic pigeons that are kept as pets or for racing by looking for a tag around their leg.

Problems caused by pigeons

A pigeon outbreak can lead to the following issues at your home or business:

  • Highly acidic pigeon droppings can cause damage to buildings, outdoor furniture, airconditioning units, solar panels and rooftop machinery
  • They leave behind an unpleasant odour
  • Noise disturbance from chirping, especially from chicks
  • Carry and transmit diseases such as histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis and ornithosis (Bird Fancier’s Lung)
  • Carry parasites such as bed bugs, bird mites, ticks and clothes moths which can cause secondary pest outbreaks and trigger allergies
  • Attract ticks, mites and cockroaches
  • Contamination of food supplies and water through droppings, feathers and nesting material
  • Slippery pigeon droppings can cause a health and safety hazard on footpaths, stairs and fire escapes
  • Pigeons can squeeze through small gaps and enter your roof space

Signs of a pigeon outbreak

Here are some ways you can tell if you have a pigeon infestation:

  • Many pigeons roosting and perching on your roof, eaves and window ledges or even nesting under your solar panels
  • A large amount of brown-white pigeon droppings
  • Nest debris appearing on your roof, such as sticks, twigs, pine needles, straw or grass stems
  • Frequent chirping noises from chicks
  • Damage to native plants in your garden from pecking
  • Feathers accumulating around your roof and yard, in gutters and blocking drains, causing leaks and overflowing in plumbing

DIY ways to avoid a pigeon outbreak

The best way to stop a pigeon outbreak is to prevent it from happening in the first place. There are several simple actions that you can take to make sure that your property does not become a potential nesting site.

We recommend removing all possible sources of food and water from your yard, including pet food, water bowls and fallen fruit.

Sealing off potential entry points with wooden panels or mesh, installing mesh screens over chimneys and fixing loose tiles on your roof will help keep them out of your home.

Regularly check your roof for nests and remove them promptly, then disinfect the area. Trim away overhanging tree branches that cover your roof and gutters.

You can even consider using audio and visual deterrents which can be purchased from hardware stores.

Professional pigeon prevention

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, pest pigeons can still persistently cause problems at your home.

At Allstate, we have a range of treatments to manage a pest pigeon outbreak. Our technicians will advise which solution is the most appropriate for your circumstances.

OvoControl

An innovative new treatment that has been shown to significantly reduce bird populations within two years, OvoControl works as a form of pigeon birth control. It uses AI-controlled automatic feeding baits laced with a chemical that inhibits egg fertilisation in female pigeons.

Bird netting

This is used to form a physical barrier to prevent pigeons from accessing your roof.

Bird spikes

Providing an uneven surface to land, particularly on leading edges, bird spikes are commonly used on exposed ledges, sills, girders and steel beams.

Bird wire

A discreet way to protect leading edges of a building, stainless steel bird wire can be secured between vertical posts and makes the surface too unstable for pigeons to land.

Bird Jolt Flat Track

An electrically active surface that works discreetly, the Bird Jolt Flat Track delivers a mild electric shock when pigeons land and stimulate it. It is humane and not harmful to pigeons in any way and can be powered either by an AC or solar charger.

Bird gel

Specially formulated, weather resistant, nearly invisible and nontoxic, bird gel can be spread over nesting areas and discourage birds from landing due to its uncomfortable, tacky consistency.

Bird repellent optical gel

A long lasting and non-harmful method to deter pigeons from an area, bird repellent optical gel not only has a strong scent that is unpleasant for pigeons. It also creates a visual disturbance and confuses pigeons to discourage them from returning to the site.

Solar panel proofing and cleaning

The shelter and warmth underneath solar panels provides an ideal spot for pigeon nesting but can cause damage over time. We can help you to protect your panels by cleaning away the mess left behind by the pigeons and installing a strong mesh around them.

Severe outbreaks

For infestations that cannot be brought under control by any other means, we can physically prevente pigeons if necessary. Our work is always carried out in the most humane and responsible way possible. We are compliant with the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and have the appropriate permits and licenses to ensure a respectful and safe outcome.

Welcome back for another instalment of On the Road with Kiki. In this series, pest consultant Kristian bring us along with him as he visits homes and businesses all around Adelaide to assess pest outbreaks. Although the weather isn’t looking favourable today, Kristian says that it won’t deter pests from being a nuisance!

He begins the day at a multi-storey student accommodation lodge, where the owner is keen for a regular pest control service to keep the place pest-free. He’s already quite well set up with some rodent baits outside, and pesticide sprays to outdoor and common indoor areas. Kristian also suggests applying a treatment dust to the roof space to combat ants, cockroaches and spiders. He gives the owner an all-inclusive quote for a quarterly pest control service which includes using bait stations and external sprays to keep away rodents, spiders, ants and cockroaches. The owner accepts and promptly books in for an initial service.

The next client has recently purchased a home and wants some termite protection. It’s pretty clear why, because Kristian spots a fence post in the backyard that has clearly suffered a significant amount of termite damage. However, luckily there are no obvious signs of active termites. He measures up and leaves the client with a quote to consider for a termite protection system.

Then, it’s off to the last job of the day in the Adelaide foothills for a termite assessment. The owner says they see signs of termite damage in their home. They’ve lived there for 23 years, and had wooden floorboards installed when they moved in. After an assessment, Kristian notes that there are multiple areas of damaged timber flooring within the home which are unfortunately “paper thin”. With piles of firewood stashed around the yard outside, there’s certainly a high risk of attracting more termites to the area, so he recommends a Sentricon baiting system for the client.

Thanks for joining us yet again for our latest instalment of On the Road with Kiki. In this series, pest consultant Kristian takes us to homes and businesses around Adelaide to assess and manage pest outbreaks. Today, it’s pesky possums on the agenda.

Starting off in Torrensville, Kristian visits a client living in a single storey house with suspected possums in the roof. He sees straight away that there is a potential entry point through the box gutter, but ends up finding multiple entry points around the home. Kristian leaves the client with a quote to block all the entry points and set up a trapping system.

The next client lives in a recently built home in Para Vista and they have had solar panels installed just a few weeks ago. While the client thinks that the possums are getting inside the home through entry points left behind after the solar panel installation, Kristian disagrees. He checks the perimeter of the house for entry points, but is unsuccessful. However, when he climbs up into the roof space, he finds evidence of rodent droppings, as well as apricots! It turns out that rodents are pinching the fruit from a neighbour’s overhanging tree, squeezing under the corrugated iron roof and having a feast inside. Kristian recommends a rodent baiting service, which comes with a six-month warranty.

The last client of the day in Athelstone says that he can hear noises in his roof, including tapping sounds. He thinks the pests sound too heavy to be rodents, more like the size of a cat, so he’s assuming that they’re possums. Turns out, it’s actually rats because Kristian spots rat droppings in the roof space. He suggests a rodent baiting program using hard plastic lockable baiting stations, just in case there are also possums around, as it is a high risk area.

Welcome back for another episode of On the Road with Kiki, where we follow pest consultant Kristian around Adelaide as he visits homes and businesses to assess pest outbreaks.

Kicking off the day in Aldinga, Kristian is tasked with a termite assessment at a holiday house. While taking a look at the sleepers underneath the house, he immediately spots some damage to some wooden sleepers. Kristian speaks to the owner on the phone and finds out that in addition to a termite protection quote, they’d like one for crawling insects as well.

Up next, there’s a pigeons nesting on some ledges at a townhouse, and the owner wants a quote to manage them, as they’re being a nuisance and leaving messy droppings on behind. It turns out that the neighbour opposite has some solar panels on their roof with pigeon activity, so that’s where they’re coming from. Kristian goes over to have a chat to them about the issue and offers them a quote for solar panel proofing.

Then it’s time for a possum assessment at another client’s home. The owner has noticed some possums in the area and their dog has even chased some away. When Kristian climbs into the roof space for a look, he finds rodent droppings instead of possums, so he gives the client a quote for some rodent baiting and treatment.

To finish off the day, Kristian visits his friend’s house for a termite treatment and protection assessment. He’s situated in a group of three units, with large trees in the area and wood scattered around the yard. Kristian recommends baiting and a liquid treatment to keep the pesky termites away.

Happy Friday! Thanks for joining us for our latest episode of On the Road with Kiki. Today, we’re following pest consultant Kristian as he tackles pest outbreaks in homes and businesses across Adelaide.

Kristian starts off the day in Mount Barker with a pest prevention quote at a restaurant, where the owner is having issues with fly control. Kristian discusses the option of applying Seclira, an insect treatment, in and around doors, which will kill insects upon contact. After going through the various options, he leaves the owner a quote for fly repelling units to be installed when the restaurant doors are opened.

The next job is a termite prevention quote for a home. Kristian takes the client through various options, including a liquid treatment, which is applied either via a spray underneath pavers and floors, or by drilling and injecting the treatment through concrete and tiles, which can get messy inside. The
client agrees that a baiting option around the perimeter of the house sounds far more appealing, and it’s also environmentally friendly. Kristian leaves them with a quote for a protection treatment and inspection.

The end of the day is in sight as Kristian heads to his last client’s house. Unfortunately, they’ve spotted some old termite damage in their garage. Kristian confirms not only these signs of termite damage in some wooden sleepers, but also catches an active termite! He emails the client a quote for a full inspection and treatment.
