Myrtle Bank is a suburb of AdelaideSouth Australia in the City of Unley. The suburb is named after a property near the foothills built in 1842 by William Sanders (1801–1880), who arrived in South Australia in 1838. He named the premises ‘Myrtle Bank’, because his friend James Gall of Trinity living in Edinburgh had a fine property of the same name.[2] The property passed through the hands of Capt. William Elder, brother of Sir Thomas Elder, before being purchased in 1848 by William Ferguson (1809–1892), who built on the original house and lived there with his family until he died.[3]

During World War I the property became a repatriation hospital.

Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide, about 4 km (2.5 mi) east of the Adelaide city centre. The suburb is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, whose predecessor was the oldest South Australian local government municipality.

History

William Street in Norwood, facing west towards the Adelaide city centre

Before British colonisation of South Australia and subsequent European settlement, Norwood was inhabited by one of the groups who later collectively became known as the Kaurna peoples.[2][3]

Early settler Edward Stephens, who arrived in the colony in 1839, wrote: “Norwood and Kent Town were unknown then. The site of the present Norwood was then a magnificent gum forest, with an undergrowth of kangaroo grass, too high in places for a man to see over; in fact persons lost their way in going from Adelaide to Kensington in those days, through attempting a short or near cut across the country”.[4]

Norwood is named after Norwood, then a village south of London. The new village east of Adelaide was first laid out in 1847.[5] The former City of Kensington and Norwood was the first outside of the City of Adelaide to receive the right to set up their own municipal corporation. The charter of the town was given on 7 July 1853 by the Governor, Sir Henry Young.[6]

History

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s with land used mainly for farming. Residential and industrial growth took place from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Expansion continued in the interwar period. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased marginally between 2001 and 2006, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.

It was named after the first farm that was established in the area in 1839, owned by Charles Gooch. A subdivision on 1842 of the surrounding area was called “The Village of Richmond”.

“Richmond Park”, the racehorse stud owned by James Henry Aldridge at the end of Richmond Road is now part of Adelaide Airport.
