Warehouse beetles contaminate your food through frequent skin shedding
Dealing with warehouse beetle problems?
A major pest that gets its name from a tendency to invade warehouse facilities, warehouse beetle outbreaks are often difficult to control because
they can hibernate and remain hidden out of sight for years.
With an abundance of food to choose from, warehouse beetles prefer feeding on all types of seeds, animal protein and woollen fabric.
However, these hungry critters will generally eat any dried food they can find. They tend to feed on broken grain fragments rather than whole grain kernels.
If you’re experiencing a warehouse beetle attack, you’ll want them gone as soon as possible. Call Allstate Pest Control for advice and solutions today.
Problems caused by a warehouse beetle infestation
- Food contamination
- Reduced quality of food
- Hair shedding from larvae can trigger skin allergies, asthma or gastrointestinal problems
- Can penetrate packaging materials such as grain sacks, plastic, foil, plastic containers, cardboard
Signs of a warehouse beetle infestation
- Not to be confused with similar looking Khapra beetles, warehouse beetles are oval-shaped, 3-5mm long with wings and 3 whitish bands across their body
- Larvae are 5-8mm long, yellow/white to dark brown coloured, and covered with thick red-brown coloured hairs (setae)
- Frequent shedding and moulting leads to a build-up of skin remnants from larvae
- Occasionally fly
- Can be found in rodent baits, dead rodents, bird nests, wasp nests, spider webs

How to treat a warehouse beetle problem
To pinpoint the source, we recommend inspecting less frequented, warm and dusty
areas, such as pantries, cabinets, cupboards and drawers and underneath the refrigerator and stove to locate larvae. Lift up carpets, rugs, cardboard boxes.
Check dead insects and rodents, rodent baits, wasp and bird nests and spider webs.
Look out for skin shedding remnants from nearby larvae.
Cleaning, wiping and vacuuming all tiny cracks and crevices helps to prepare the affected area for treatment. Take care to dispose of all infested food and cardboard boxes securely.
Warehouse beetles can be notoriously hard to remove yourself, so if you’re finding it hard to manage them, we recommend contacting Allstate for treatment options.

How warehouse beetle control works
Good hygiene practices are a good starting point to remove a warehouse beetle outbreak, but at Allstate, we believe that fumigation is the best way to prevent them for good. In serious outbreaks and commercial or industrial settings, traps can also be effective.
Insecticide fumigation
A licensed pest control technician is required to apply both a contact insecticide, followed by a residual insecticide.
At Allstate, we ensure that enough residual insecticide is applied to all cracks and crevices, walls, floors, windowsills, shelves and underneath furniture.
Traps
Sticky adhesive traps and pheromone traps can be used in serious outbreaks to immobilise warehouse beetles.
Monitoring outbreaks
We may use pheromone traps to monitor for the presence of warehouse beetles before and after treatment, and also to identify early signs of a new outbreak.
Follow-up treatment
As warehouse beetle larvae can hibernate in secluded places for years, we recommend contact and residual insecticides to be applied every 6-8 weeks.
Emergency warehouse beetle control
We understand that some outbreaks can seem to happen out of the blue. That’s why we offer an urgent call-out service 24/7 for your peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions about warehouse beetles
Where do warehouse beetles like to hide?
They are commonly found in less frequented, warm and dusty areas, such as pantries, cabinets, cupboards and drawers and underneath the refrigerator and stove. Also check the garage and laundry. Lift up carpets, rugs, cardboard boxes and check underneath.
Also inspect dead insects and rodents, rodent baits, wasp and bird nests and spider webs.
Does household insect spray work on warehouse beetles?
Yes, some sprays contain compounds such as pyrethrin which is effective against warehouse beetles.
However, if the spray isn’t applied thoroughly to all the hard-to-reach places where they hide, you may find the outbreak keeps persisting or continues to worsen. This is where Allstate can help.
Our highly trained, licensed pest control technicians have the expertise to handle, mix and apply all insecticides.
We have an extensive understanding of warehouse beetle behaviour to help you manage your outbreak effectively right from the beginning of your treatment.
Are warehouse beetles poisonous?
They are not known to bite or sting people, however, if you accidentally ingest their larvae, you may experience respiratory or gastrointestinal distress.
Is warehouse beetle pest control safe?
Yes, all our technicians are licensed and highly trained in the safe use of contact and residual insecticide sprays to manage warehouse beetles. We take precautions around unnecessary exposure to food items, people and
pets. Your technician will advise you when it is safe to re-enter the affected area following treatment.
