Cigarette beetles contaminate food and are resistant to many household insect sprays

Experiencing a cigarette beetle problem?

As their name suggests, cigarette beetles are commonly found living in tobacco products and processed tobacco. However, these sneaky pests are very adaptable and easily thrive even if there isn’t any tobacco around.

They’ll make themselves at home inside your kitchen pantry feasting on stored grains, nuts, pet food, spices and cereal. Cigarette beetles have also been known to chew through cardboard packaging, furniture, wool and
leather products, dried flower arrangements and clothing.

Are you noticing some signs of cigarette beetles lurking around your home? Don’t wait until it’s too late – speak to an Allstate stored product pest control technician today.

How to spot a cigarette beetle outbreak

  • Adult beetles are round, reddish-brown coloured and 2-3mm long
  • Females lay white oval-shaped eggs in food items which hatch into curved, hairy, creamy white/grey coloured larvae that grow up to 4mm long
  • Larvae create tunnels through food items as they eat
  • Silken webbing strands in food items
  • Larvae pupate in cocoons spun with silken webbing covered with bits of food

How to treat a cigarette beetle outbreak

The first step that we recommend is to locate and then remove the source of the infestation. Carefully inspect all items that you suspect have been contaminated, wrap them tightly in plastic, then dispose them outside immediately.

Placing other contaminated items in the freezer for 4-7 days will kill off any remaining beetles.

To prevent a reinfestation, thoroughly clean and vacuum the affected areas, paying attention to small cracks and crevices. Ensure that food is properly stored in sturdy, sealed containers.

If you are still struggling to manage the outbreak, we recommend contacting Allstate for a professional assessment and advice.

How cigarette beetle control works

At Allstate, our thorough understanding of cigarette beetle behaviour is central to removing an outbreak. After identifying and locating the source of the outbreak, we’ll treat it using a combination of pheromone traps and
fumigation.

Pheromone traps

Designed to lure and remove all male beetles, pheromone traps cause a decline to the cigarette beetle population by stopping the mating process. With only female beetles left, they are unable to mate and therefore continue laying more eggs.

Fumigation

For severe outbreaks and to prevent future infestations, we use aerosol insecticides that leave a residual finish. These are usually applied after you have cleaned and emptied the affected area. We use a special nozzle to ensure the aerosols can reach beetles hidden within tiny cracks and crevices.

Follow-up treatment

You’ll typically require between 2-4 treatments every 3 weeks, in accordance with the cigarette beetle life cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions about cigarette beetles

Is your cigarette beetle treatment safe?

Yes, we avoid using insecticide treatment around food. We only use products which are non-toxic for people, pets and the environment. Our technicians will leave you with clear instructions about when the affected area is safe to be used again. At Allstate, we are highly trained in the proper and safe use of chemical treatments.

What are the signs of a cigarette beetle outbreak?

Look for round, 2-3mm long, reddish-brown coloured insects crawling inside your food items and pantry. You may also see frass (beetle droppings), insect parts, white silken webbing, oval-shaped eggs, curvy larvae and silken cocoons.

  • Damaged grain kernels, replaced with large amounts of hollow husks and flour. This nearly all types of grain including wheat, rice, barley, sorghum
  • Sweet, musty odour in damaged grain
  • Brown-black coloured insects, cylindrical shaped, 2.5-3mm long
  • Damaged wood, cork, paper, dried fruit and seeds if there is no grain available

How do I prevent a cigarette beetle outbreak?

  • Keep food stored in well-sealed, sturdy airtight containers
  • Inspect your food items carefully after opening and before bringing
them into your house. Be wary of using products with damaged
    packaging
  • Keep food storage areas clean and wipe up spills immediately

Do normal household aerosol sprays work on cigarette beetles?

Many commercially available aerosol sprays contain a chemical called pyrethrin, which is not effective on cigarette beetles. To properly treat and prevent future infestations, we recommend contacting Allstate for professional pest control services to assist with targeted treatments.
